SUMMARY:Hydrogen as a Marine Fuel: Opportunities and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:In June 2023\, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) set revised targets in the 80th session of the Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) to decarbonize the global fleet. The new targets include a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030\, a 70% reduction by 2040 (compared to 2008 levels)\, and the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. \nThe implementation of alternative fuels to conventional fossil-based fuels is key to the decarbonisation of the global maritime and shipping industry. Green Hydrogen is currently one of the prime candidates among alternative shipping fuels\, as it offers ship owners and operators a low-carbon and low-emission fuel option for potential use in internal combustion engines and fuel cells. \nHowever\, there are several complex challenges concerning the adoption of green hydrogen in the shipping industry. In this webinar\, three speakers were invited to present on various topics related to the role of green hydrogen in decarbonising the maritime industry and shed light on the main challenges the maritime industry is currently facing. \nThe invited presentations and speakers are: \n‌Presentation 1: Alternative Fuels and their Implications on Vessel Design \n\nPresented by: Dr. Thomas Beard (BMT)\n\nPresentation 2: Ports’ Opportunities and Challenges in Global Hydrogen Supply Chains \n\nPresented by: Associate Professor Peggy Chen (AMC\, UTAS)\n\n‌Presentation 3: The feasibility of using hydrogen as a marine fuel in Australia \n\nPresented by: Dr. Hongjun Fan (AMC\, UTAS)\n\nFollowed by Q&A

SUMMARY:WA Social Enterprises: Certify as a business for good!
DESCRIPTION:The world has changed. So has business. Now is the time to get recognised as a certified social enterprise. \nAlmost 500 Australian social enterprises have chosen certification – WA is a very small portion of those certified. Are we ready to join the community of game changers? \nWASEC invites you to join us and Social Traders to learn about what certification provides. Social Traders is Australia’s only independent verification of social enterprise status. Social Traders work with social enterprises across all impact models\, legal types and all stages of social enterprise development including start-ups. \nIn this online workshop delivered by the WA Social Enterprise Council and Social Traders\, you’ll get: \n\nInsight into the social enterprise model and why its catching on globally.\nHow certification supports your business to grow.\nAn introduction to our community of gamechangers and membership offer.\nHow certification supports access to social procurement opportunities.\nEverything needed to get started and receive your certification activation kit.\n\n——— \nA message from Social Traders CEO\, Tara Anderson: \nAt a time when businesses are grappling with the challenge of creating purpose beyond profit\, social enterprises have been doing it for decades. And it’s time the whole economy learnt from them and shifted in that direction. \nCertification is your key to being recognised as a social enterprise – by the sector\, by funders\, by big business and by government. \nThe number of certified social enterprises is growing by an average of 29% every year. We want all social enterprises to be certified so they can be recognised\, win new contracts\, access capacity building support and secure grant funding or social investment. 79% of certified social enterprises have increased their revenue between certification periods. \nMy ask – stand up and be proud of who we are\, by getting certified \nLet’s be unwavering in making our identity as social enterprises known. Let’s clearly state who we are\, so we can tell the country why we matter. Because if we harness our collective energy\, everything is possible. \nJoin us at the forefront of the shift to business for good. \nFor any questions on the event or to connect with WASEC please email hello@wasec.org. \nFor questions regarding certification contact certification@socialtraders.com.au

SUMMARY:Meet VentureX: Fireside Chat with Tracie Clark & Sheryl Frame
DESCRIPTION:Angel investors we invite you to join us for a fireside with Tracie & Sheryl from VentureX\, an angel syndicate focused on female led ventures or teams. \nThere remains a gap in capital invested into female founded companies globally. In Australia in 2022\, only 3% of venture capital funding went to women only founded companies\, with only 10% going to gender diverse teams. \nNow is the time to level the playing field. \nAt VentureX we invest in scalable\, for profit companies\, that are female led with at least 1 woman in an executive role and holding significant equity. \nSheryl is the CEO of Perth based start-up\, Liquim Limited\, and previously started four IT-related companies. She’s also worked as a Commercialisation Adviser for the Federal Government’s Accelerating Commercialisation (AC) program and now consults on strategy and commercialisation through her own company\, EDICT International Consultant. \nTracie is a seasoned angel investor\, having started investing more than 20 years ago\, and manages her own financial planning company. She’s also currently a Director at some impressive organisations including Cancel Council WA & Spacecubed. She was previously the Vice Chair of Perth Angels. \nFor us\, it is not just about writing a cheque. \nIt’s about providing Founders with the guidance\, connections and support to help startups scale and grow through our network of angel investors and business leaders. \nWe’ll be chatting with Tracie & Sheryl about the VentureX thesis\, investment strategies\, types of companies they’ll be investing in\, and how Angels can co-invest alongside them!

SUMMARY:Human Centric AI Seminar: An Argument for Limiting Collection of Data
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n“Notice and choice\,” the dominant model for governing digital data collection and use\, assumes that if proper transparency is provided people will only use platforms that have data practices they agree with. But\, in reality\, widespread data collection and use of machine learning enables inferences to be generated that are hard for people to anticipate. This talk describes my recent work focused on people’s beliefs and expectations about what data are collected about them and how those data are used\, and makes an argument about how specific limits on data collection and inferences could help people make privacy choices that are more aligned with their preferences. \nBio:\nDr. Emilee Rader is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Information at Michigan State University. She studies how people reason and make choices about data collection and inferences enabled by digital technologies\, to better understand why people struggle to manage their privacy\, and to discover new ways to help people gain more appropriate control over information about them. Dr. Rader earned her PhD from the University of Michigan School of Information and spent two years at Northwestern University in the Department of Communication Studies\, where she was a recipient of the highly competitive Computing Innovation post-doctoral fellowship award from the Computing Research Association. She also has a professional Master’s degree from the Human Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University\, and worked with an interdisciplinary team of researchers at Motorola Labs designing and evaluating applications for mobile technologies. Her work has been funded by several grants from the National Science Foundation\, and she primarily publishes in usable privacy and security and human-computer interaction venues. \n\n\n\n\nRegister now\nPrice\nFree \nEvent date and time\nWednesday 28 Jun 2023\n10.00am to 11.00am AEST \nLocation\nOnline virtual event\nLogin details will be emailed to registrants

SUMMARY:Online Panel: Harnessing AI For Good
DESCRIPTION:How can we harness AI for good? Join us for a conversation on creating AI that is inclusive\, personalised\, and fit-for-purpose. \n\nArtificial intelligence (AI) already powers many systems and tools in our daily lives. But existing biases and lack of inclusion are being embedded into these tools. \nWhat needs to happen as we design and develop these tools to ensure they are beneficial\, accessible\, and useful for as many people as possible? \nDona Sakar (Microsoft)\, Ed Santow (UTS Human Technology Institute)\, and Wayne Hawkins (ACCAN) join Manisha Amin (Centre for Inclusive Design) to discuss how to make AI inclusive by design\, and why accessible tech is an opportunity for innovation. \nThis event is part of the City of Sydney’s Visiting Entrepreneurs Program\, and is run in partnership with the UTS Centre for Social Justice & Inclusion. \nAbout Dona Sarkar – City of Sydney Visiting Entrepreneur (USA) \nBy day\, Dona leads the Accessibility tech program at Microsoft\, her latest focus is using OpenAI inclusively in their work to make sure the thousands of products they ship are usable by people with disabilities\, neurodiversity and mental health concerns. By night\, Dona runs her own fashion business\, Prima Dona Studios. She also coaches professionals on how to build non-boring corporate careers\, writes both fiction and non-fiction and – as of this year — is also a restaurateur. \nAbout the Visiting Entrepreneur Program \nThis online event is brought to you by the Centre for Inclusive Design in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney’s Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion. \nThis event is part of the Visiting Entrepreneur Program\, an annual City of Sydney initiative that connects international entrepreneurs with our local startup ecosystem. The 21 – 28 June 2023 program will explore the current wave of ideas\, trends\, and technologies disrupting society and economies. Discover what will outlive the hype\, how to discern the opportunities from the noise\, and the considerations for equitable impact. See the full program at city.sydney/vep #VEPSyd \nThe Visiting Entrepreneur Program is produced by the City of Sydney with partner organisations from the local startup ecosystem.
