SUMMARY:Local Jobs for Social Enterprises
DESCRIPTION:Are you a social enterprise that employs vulnerable people?\nWould you like to hire more people more but need funding and wrap around support to do so?\nYou could be eligible for up to $10\,000 to support a trainee or apprentice back into work after being long-term unemployed\n\nThe Commonwealth government has committed to supporting social enterprise as the mechanism for overcoming barriers to employment. This was outlined first in the ‘Working Future: The Australian Government’s White Paper on Jobs and Opportunities‘ and then in the recent Federal Budget as part of a $54 million commitment for a Paid Employment Pathways Package. \nThe ‘WorkFoundations’ program supports individuals back into employment through social enterprise and other suitable businesses. Specifically\, $21.9 million has been set aside to pilot an initiative that will see job-focused social enterprises funded to work directly with people with complex barriers\, giving them the support they need to get back to work. \nJoin our webinar on Wednesday\, October 9th to find out how you can benefit from the opportunities offered by Workforce Australia and the Local Jobs Program.

SUMMARY:SMEs in Web3 Forum
DESCRIPTION:Blockchain-based Web3 applications offer unprecedented advantages in enhancing business efficiency during digital transformation; however\, SMEs exhibit a notably low adoption rate. This interactive session will explore the reasons behind this hesitance and demonstrate how SMEs can effectively utilise these innovations. Through practical demonstrations and detailed case studies with invited industry practitioners\, we will discuss the tangible benefits and common obstacles that SMEs face in the adoption of new technologies. \nSMEs in Web3 Forum is a collaboration between the Asia Pacific Family Business Symposium with the Western Australia WEB3 Association and the Global Fintech Institute. The event hosts “fireside chats” and presentations from SMEs and experts on how SMEs use WEB3 technologies in their business. \nThe event is moderated by Dr Andrzej Gwizdalski\, WAWEB3 Chair and UWA Honorary Research Fellow with Prof David Lee Kuo\, Global Fintech Institute Chair. \nPlease take advantage of the full day Symposium held online on the 26th of September and register free here: https://www.uwa.edu.au/schools…

SUMMARY:Human-Centric AI & Security Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nEquipped with smartphones\, tablets\, and virtual reality headsets\, we can now perform a wide variety of tasks from virtually anywhere. However\, this newfound freedom and flexibility come with its own challenges\, particularly in terms of personal privacy. One emerging threat is sophisticated machine learning (ML) attacks that break privacy assumptions by extracting previously undetectable patterns carried by our daily actions. \nIn this talk\, I will discuss two of our recent projects on identifying and mitigating real-world privacy threats. First\, we identify a general keystroke inference attack in the physical world\, where the attacker does not rely on any prior knowledge or labeled data on the target user or their device. Just by analyzing a 10-min video of the target’s typing hands from meters away\, the attacker can extract over 90% of their typed content. This is done by applying a self-supervised learning pipeline to the video\, which curates labeled data from the video and train DNN models to achieve robust inference results. We then extend this attack into virtual reality. By screen-recording the target’s avatar for 10 min\, the attacker can also recover the typed content. This is made possible by the addition of transformer models designed to mitigate digital noise in avatar motion capture. Finally\, I will also discuss ongoing projects that explore new forms of privacy attacks in VR systems. \nBio:\nZhuolin Yang is a final year PhD at SAND Lab\, University of Chicago. She researches security and privacy issues related to user interfaces. Specifically\, she identifies and mitigates new attacks made possible by customized ML solutions. Her work has produced publications at top CS conferences (USENIX Security\, CHI) and media coverages by MIT Technology Review and New Scientist.

SUMMARY:Contributing to a thriving culture of social innovation across WA
DESCRIPTION:Are you an individual who is looking to make a difference\, has strong social capital and a go-get attitude? Or a funder who wants to support innovation in the not-for-profit sector in WA? Then this event is for you!\nIn a collaborative effort\, Meshpoints and 10×10 are working to create a thriving social innovation culture that supports early stage innovation in the not-for-profit sector in WA 🌱✨ \nIn 2021\, 10×10 raised $441\,000 from one crowdfunding event for three innovative not-for-profits; Ocean Heroes\, The Underground Collaborative and Zero2Hero. This event was led by a volunteer committee of ten individuals who wanted to make a difference. \nAfter a short hiatus 10×10 is looking to return to WA. With fresh leadership and an exciting new model of venture philanthropy that supports our crowdfunding events\, 10×10 is able to provide not-for-profits with seed capital and a pathway to transformational funding. \nEnsuring that we’re firmly rooted in the WA innovative network we have partnered with Meshpoints to collaboratively work towards contributing to a thriving social innovation culture in WA 🌟🤝 \nWe’re now looking to connect with individuals for our next Perth 10×10 Committee and with funders who are excited by our ambitious vision.

SUMMARY:ALA Webinar: Exploring next-gen biodiversity detection technologies
DESCRIPTION:Access to high-quality biodiversity data is more essential than ever in understanding and responding to changes in our natural environment. This information is used for informing planning\, policy and decision-making and delivering research. Through the Atlas of Living Australia\, more than 135 million species occurrence records are available as open data\, with rich information accompanying these records such as images\, location\, spatial\, genetic and related data. \nBy enhancing traditional methods to monitor species with novel technologies\, a more comprehensive view of Australia’s biodiversity can be developed. To celebrate Biodiversity Month in September\, hear from three speakers discuss their use of ecoacoustics\, eDNA and camera trapping as innovative methods to enhance our ability to detect and monitor biodiversity in Australia. \nThis event will be recorded\, with the recording made available through ALA channels in the week following the event. \nThe ALA receives support from the Australian Government through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) and is hosted by CSIRO. \nFor further information\, reach out to communications@ala.org.au.
