SUMMARY:People power for a Just Transition
DESCRIPTION:How can we prevent exploitation in the energy transition? What will work look like in a Net Zero future? What role do labour rights and trade unions play in a Just Transition? For our fifth event in the Perspectives on the Transition series\, we are delighted to host our Advisory Board Chair\, Sharan Burrow AC! Sharan has previously led the International Trade Union Confederation (the largest trade union in the world) and is a global advocate for just transition. \nThe transformation required for the energy transition will encompass all facets of society\, including how\, why and where we work. However\, the energy transition also holds the potential to marginalise already disadvantaged groups and further entrench global inequality. In this seminar\, Sharan will discuss the importance of sustainable business development and the roles of human rights\, employment and justice when it comes to delivering a Net Zero future. \nFollowing the seminar\, drinks and light refreshments will be provided for those attending in person. \n(Please note: details of livestream will be provided closer to the event) \nThe presenter: \nSharan Burrow is a global advocate for human rights\, climate action and Just Transition. She is the Former General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (2010-2022). Previously she was President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (2000–2010) and President of the Australian Education Union (1992-2000). Sharan is well known for her international advocacy on employment\, human rights\, industrial relations\, corporate responsibility and climate action with green industrialisation and just transition solutions. Sharan is currently a Visiting Professor in Practice at the LSE-Grantham Institute and chair of its Just Transition Finance Lab’s Advisory Council\, a Vice-Chair of the European Climate Foundation\, a board member of the Green Hydrogen Association\, Co-Chair of the IEA Labour Council\, an adviser on Temasek’s Sustainability Advisory Panel\, a board member of Novonix and Chair of the Curtin University Institute for Energy Transition Advisory Board.
