Oceans Institute Student Society: Grand Challenges, Big Solutions

Grand Challenges, Big Solutions is a design thinking workshop where students will use creativity and innovation to tackle tricky, real-life ocean issues!

Academics, researchers and industry professionals are invited to join for the evening session to hear from the students as they present their big ideas and innovative solutions.

 

DEADLINE: ATSE Propel Australian Submarine Scholarship Program

Propel: Australian Submarine Scholarship Program will award 3,000 two-year undergraduate scholarships, providing students with access to education and career opportunities associated with the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine (NPS) enterprise. 

Propel will create a highly-skilled STEM graduate workforce, strengthening Australia’s sovereign capabilities in the AUKUS NPS enterprise. Propel aims to build engagement and connections between students, the Australian Submarine Agency, and the broader NPS enterprise.

Seafood Innovation Workshop 2025

Exploring opportunities for value-adding, shelf-life extension and downstream innovations within the seafood industry.

WAFIC is collaborating with the Sustainable Innovative Food Technologies centre (SIFT) and the Food Industry Development team at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) to deliver a targeted workshop for the seafood industry that explores opportunities and processes for value-adding, shelf-life extension, and downstream innovations.

Webinar: Blue Economy Symposium (OMAE 2025 Vancouver)

The Blue Economy Symposium is an event focused on the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic development, often featuring research and discussions on topics such as aquaculture, renewable energy, and offshore technology. The Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) has been actively involved in organising and hosting these symposia, including those held as part of OMAE (International Conference on Ocean, Offshore, and Arctic Engineering).

This webinar will highlight five presentations from the Blue Economy Symposium in Vancouver, Canada, held at OMAE2025, providing an opportunity to hear high-quality research and gain insights from industry leaders on the current and future directions of the Blue Economy.

Webinar: Offshore Seaweed Cultivation

This webinar explores the cutting-edge advancements in deep-cycling offshore seaweed mariculture, a “stellar technology” poised to revolutionise ocean regeneration and sustainable economies. Led by Dr. Brian von Herzen, Dr. Joseph Rauch, and Steve Hamilton, the session will delve into the automation, scaling, and commercialisation of these innovative platforms with Prof Jeff Wright discussing commercially scalable hatchery and grow-out methods for offshore cultivation of kelp.

Attendees will learn about the ecological benefits, including carbon removal and climate repair, alongside the intricate engineering and operational strategies—from remote command and control to robust structural design—that are making large-scale, cost-effective deployment a reality for coastal communities across Australasia.
