Subsea Controls Down Under Conference

The Perth branch of the Society for Underwater Technology host their 7th Subsea Controls technical conference and Exhibition

This international conference in the field of “Subsea Controls & Data Acquisition” is aimed at the diverse disciplines engaged in subsea controls technology. The goal is to share experiences by networking, discussing global and regional challenges, showcasing ways of bringing new ideas and technology to the market, sharing learnings and providing an understanding from an operator’s viewpoint on how the industry can benefit from operational and project experiences.

The Conference will be held at the Parmelia Hilton in Perth on the 29th & 30th October 2024, with a networking/welcome Ice Breaker Function to be held on the 28th October 2024 at Frasers Restaurant.

Masterclass Series AUKUS: Pillar II ADVANCED CAPABILITIES

The UWA Defence and Security Institute is pleased to announce the second in its Masterclass Series. With the support of the Department of Defence, Department of Foreign and Affairs and Trade, and Defence West (State Government of Western Australia), the UWA DSI Masterclass: AUKUS: Pillar II will be held on Wednesday 9 October 2024.

This essential course has been designed for those seeking a deeper understanding of AUKUS Pillar II (Advanced Capabilities) and its strategic impacts on Western Australia and the broader region. This course will explore the vision, technologies and innovations that form the foundation of Pillar II, and how all stakeholders can lean into WA’s ability to deliver these advanced capabilities by connecting the dots inside and outside the ecosystem to make WA an integral part of this nationwide endeavour.

The UWA Defence and Security Institute warmly invite you to attend a public event and panel discussion on WA’s Growing Strategic Importance: A Deep Dive into AUKUS and the Surface Fleet Review.

For an Australian state that has gained much of its regional prominence in the export of minerals and hydrocarbons from its Indian Ocean ports, Western Australia has also grown in strategic and military importance over the past few years. The AUKUS announcement and a more consequential U.S. Force Posture Initiative commitment coupled with a bigger WA shipbuilding focus, as evidenced in the wake of Australia’s recent Combatant Surface Fleet Review, has put HMAS Stirling and the Australian Marine Complex in Henderson in both the national and regional spotlight.

We are delighted to invite to Perth for this special event and program, Dr Zack Cooper, Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington D.C., Professor Alessio Patalano, Professor of War & Strategy in East Asia, Director, King’s Japan Programme, King’s College in London, Jennifer Parker, Expert Associate, National Security College, ANU, Professor Peter Dean, Director, Foreign Policy and Defence at the United States Studies Centre, The University of Sydney. DEADLINE: ADSTAR 2024 Call for Submissions

Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is calling for abstract submissions exploring disruptive technologies that would contribute to the defence of Australia by giving the country an edge over any better-resourced larger enemy.

DSTG wants to hear from universities, research institutions, and research and development departments from business and industry in diverse disciplines including cyber security, computer science, robotics, engineering, communications and networking, and the physical sciences.

DSTG technical committees will review and select from the submissions to develop the speaker program for ADSTAR 2024. ADSTAR is the primary knowledge-sharing forum for the nation’s top minds in dual-use innovation, disruptive technology and asymmetric defence capabilities to gather with their international counterparts and industry peers.

DSTG is exploring the art of the possible in research and innovation: emerging technologies with the potential to deliver an asymmetric advantage – to circumvent an opponent’s strengths and deliver an element of surprise that is difficult to counter via conventional means.

The theme of ADSTAR 2024 is Accelerating development of asymmetric capabilities for Defence. The summit will be held against a backdrop of economic uncertainty and regional instability, in which the nature of warfare has changed and Defence priorities are changing with it.

The technical review committees welcome submissions on disruptive technologies across a spectrum of capability readiness from concept development to mature demonstrations of prototypes, particularly as they relate to six key fields: trusted autonomy, quantum, information warfare, long-range fires, hypersonics, and directed energy.

DEADLINE: AUKUS Electronic Warfare Innovation Challenge

Industry and academia are invited to respond to a request for proposals (RFP) for the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator’s first AUKUS Innovation Challenge in Electronic Warfare.

The AUKUS innovation challenges will seek solutions to shared problems across Australia, the United Kingdom and United States. The government innovation programs of each nation will conduct this inaugural challenge simultaneously.

This challenge will focus on Defence’s ability to leverage electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) technologies and capabilities that provide a competitive advantage to electromagnetic targeting, and those that protect Defence from adversary electromagnetic targeting capabilities.

The 6 key elements of the targeting cycle that Defence is interested in improving through development and transition of innovative technologies are:

find: identify a target using the EMS
fix: identify a target’s location using the EMS
track: monitor a target’s movement using the EMS
target: select and apply appropriate EMS assets and/or EMS enabled weapon systems
engage: apply EMS assets and enabled weapons to a target
assess: evaluate effects of an attack using the EMS.

DEADLINE: Entrepreneurial Foundations For Defence

Build the foundations for successful commercialisation

Entrepreneurial Foundations for Defence (EFD) is the second phase in the Defence Trailblazer DINAMIC Program.

Designed to support researchers, innovators and emerging companies with products, services or technology that can provide a capability benefit to our Defence sector, EFD will help you understand what is required for success in the defence market.

Delivered through a mixture of online and in-person sessions, participants gain essential insights to build defence, technology and commercial readiness, along with access to expert mentors and technical specialists.

The program concludes with an opportunity for participants to showcase their innovation(s), in person, to relevant people within the defence market and the venture capital investment community. There will also be a $10,000 grant for each participant in the program to support travel to in-person sessions, and some early-stage business expenses.
