WA’s Growing Strategic Importance : A Deep Dive into AUKUS and the Surface Fleet Review
The UWA Defence and Security Institute warmly invite you to attend a public event and panel discussion on WA’s Growing Strategic Importance: A Deep Dive into AUKUS and the Surface Fleet Review.
For an Australian state that has gained much of its regional prominence in the export of minerals and hydrocarbons from its Indian Ocean ports, Western Australia has also grown in strategic and military importance over the past few years. The AUKUS announcement and a more consequential U.S. Force Posture Initiative commitment coupled with a bigger WA shipbuilding focus, as evidenced in the wake of Australia’s recent Combatant Surface Fleet Review, has put HMAS Stirling and the Australian Marine Complex in Henderson in both the national and regional spotlight.
We are delighted to invite to Perth for this special event and program, Dr Zack Cooper, Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington D.C., Professor Alessio Patalano, Professor of War & Strategy in East Asia, Director, King’s Japan Programme, King’s College in London, Jennifer Parker, Expert Associate, National Security College, ANU, Professor Peter Dean, Director, Foreign Policy and Defence at the United States Studies Centre, The University of Sydney. Linda Dawson, Deputy Director General, Industry, Science and Innovation at the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation will moderate this panel discussion and the Honourable David Johnston will be our Master of Ceremonies.
We hope you are available to join us as our expert speakers take a deep dive into how Western Australia fits into AUKUS and broader U.S., U.K. and Australian strategic thinking about the region.

Join the upcoming roundtable in Perth, Australia to integrate into the global mining cyber security sharing community.
The MM-ISAC is holding a roundtable meeting to bring together member companies and other mining company cyber security leaders to share intelligence, dig-in on critical risk factors and topics, and confirm a plan for increasing collaboration and sharing and ensuring an united approach to the cyber resiliency of our industry. As someone responsible for the cyber security of mining operations, please join the upcoming roundtable to integrate into the global mining cyber security sharing community.
Cyber security is increasingly complex for mining companies as the digitalization and automation of our mines advances swiftly. Why do it alone? What can we achieve together to protect our mines?
During the roundtable, participants will share their critical issues and dig-in on pathways for solutions covering many of the cyber security priorities today. Topics will include:
Who we are
The Mining and Metals ISAC (MM-ISAC) is a non-profit, industry-owned corporation established to improve the cyber security of metals and mining companies. Its goal is to protect members against incidents that could impact safety, environmental sustainability, or operational productivity. This mission will be achieved by sharing threat and vulnerability information, cross company collaboration, improving the resilience of our supply chain, and providing opportunities for training and knowledge sharing.
How do you turn a cyber attack into a non-existent threat?
AI and ML bring many valuable applications across the organisation, delivering amazing opportunities — as well as threats, and the responsibility of ethics. Understanding the intersection of security challenges and product architecture is vital.
Transforming security practices requires enabling teams with foundational security principles in the design, development and running of cloud services, which can make all the difference when it comes to cyber threats. Security should be at the core of any SaaS product — not just bolted on at the end. Product design, cloud operations, and data integration are all key elements to getting it right.
Join Mathew to explore leadership strategies to achieve trust and security, sharing best practices, everyday applications, and the pitfalls to watch out for.
As always, we will have Q&A time plus networking over drinks and pizzas.
Registration essential.
