Spotlight on Commercialisation – IP Basics

Join for the next Spotlight on Commercialisation session to learn the fundamentals of intellectual property, Curtin University’s approach to protecting research innovations and how decisions around patent filing align with an overall commercialisation strategy.
You’ll hear from Associate Professor Tejas Bhatelia, a Chemical Engineering academic at Curtin with experience translating research from laboratory-scale concepts through prototyping, intellectual property protection, industry validation, scale-up and commercialisation. Drawing on his experience developing SpiroPak, an advanced structured packing technology originating from Curtin research, Tejas will share an academic’s perspective on recognising the commercial potential of research and moving it towards practical application.
In this session, you’ll learn:
- The fundamentals of intellectual property and Curtin’s approach;
- Where patent protection fits within a broader commercialisation strategy;
- How to recognise when research may have commercial potential;
- Practical lessons from an academic who has navigated the commercialisation journey.
Whether you’re actively exploring commercialisation or simply curious about the potential of your research, this session will provide a practical introduction to IP and the support available at Curtin.
