SUMMARY:DEADLINE: Australian Angel Awards
DESCRIPTION:Techboard is pleased to be back with the Australian Angel Awards for another year\, this time with a new partner\, Angel Loop. \nThe purpose of these awards is to celebrate the contribution Angel investors make to the startup ecosystem and overall economy and community  in Australia. Angel investors not only provide their own money as capital to startups and early stage businesses\, they are also generally active in their support of their investee companies\, providing guidance\, mentoring\, introductions and more. \nEntries for the Awards have been extended until Midnight on 7 November 2023. \nThe categories for 2023 have been modified in recognition of shifts in the Investment Landscape in Australia. With greater emphasis being placed on the more philanthropic role Angel investment can play in the Australian and global community we have introduced an award for the Biggest Impact Angel Investment.  Consistent with the work that many groups have been doing to help ensure that founders from diverse backgrounds are able to obtain investment into their startups we have introduced an award to celebrate a Champion of Investment Diversity. \nThese add to the five existing categories\, although we have made some changes there as well. We are now only counting new angel investments rather than including follow-on investments as we have done in previous years. \nMost active Angel group assessed by the highest number of confirmed new Angel investments made during FY23. \nMost active regional Angel group for angel groups based outside of a capital city\, assessed by the highest number of confirmed new Angel investments. \nMost active Angel investor assessed by the highest number of confirmed new Angel investments. \nAngel Investor of the year to be awarded to Angel investor who has made a significant contribution to the Australian Angel investment community as assessed by the judging panel – taking into account not just the investor’s investment activity\, but also their impact on the angel investor community through education\, support\, promotion or other activities. \nBest Angel Exit of the year assessed to be the most financially successful exit of an Angel investment. \nIndividual Angel investors and Angel investment groups from across the country participate in the awards which are based on a data-driven assessment as well as an expert judging panel. \nEntries into the awards also supplement Techboard’s capture of startup funding data available to our subscribers and are covered in our reports on startup and young tech company funding. \nThis year the winners of the awards will be presented at an event to be held in conjunction with the Perth Angels during the West Tech Fest in December 2023.

Although they are both different forms of legal entities\, they still face exactly the same challenges to become groups that are both self-sustaining and that can effectively serve the communities that they aim to engage with. \nActivate Mental Health is a 7-year-old entity that has been built from the ground up that is changing the landscape of Perth’s mental health sector. Through the provision of fun\, volunteer-led peer support social activities\, the group has helped a large number of people to reduce their social isolation\, make friendships and engage in activities they enjoy\, leading to improvements in their mental well-being. \nActivate Mental Health currently has over 20 engaged volunteers who run over 300 events annually across Perth for its 5\,500+ members. This\, remarkably\, is all done on a budget of $4\,000 per annum\, which is completely financed by three loyal small businesses. The group is progressing to become a registered charity in this current financial year. \nHear from group founder Rahul Seth about the 7 lessons he wishes he had known before commencing on the journey to building a game-changing organisation that is making a true impact in the community. \nBiography \nRahul Seth is a Chartered Accountant and founder of Perth’s biggest mental well-being support group\, Activate Mental Health. The organisation was formed in 2016. initially as a way to have some fun and make new friends but has now expanded into an entity that is on the verge of becoming a registered charity. Rahul professionally works as a NDIS mental health support worker. In May 2023\, Rahul was named as the 2023 WA Volunteer of the Year for his contributions to the not-for-profit and mental health sectors.

There will also be scale-up success stories and live panel discussions with industry experts and investors which will help founders gain invaluable insight. \nWHY PARTICIPATE? \nOrganised by Startup&Angels\, this Perth Edition: of Investment Strategies is a unique opportunity for attendees to: \n🌟Network with Australia investors\, founders\, or startup solution providers to optimize your growth\n🌟Interact with innovative founders and discover the next generation of movers and shakers\n🌟Find your next business partner\, friend\, mentor\, or investor \nPanel Theme: Investment Strategies: Finding your funding \nTurning a business idea into reality often hinges on securing the right funding. Many startup founders face challenges in locating investors or lack the know-how to do so. Moreover\, some may lack the necessary groundwork to present a compelling case to potential investors. This is precisely why the ‘Investment Strategies’ event aims to assist startup founders in their quest for funding. \nThe panel discussion featuring investors and experts\, will delve into investment strategies and the obstacles that early-stage startups encounter. It covers a wide spectrum\, from securing initial seed funding to effectively navigating the complexities of a Series A round. The primary objective of this panel is to empower attendees with a comprehensive grasp of the various avenues available for initiating and financing their projects. This knowledge equips them to make well-informed decisions for the growth of their businesses. \nTopics of discussion will encompass crafting a compelling pitch\, the fundamentals of seed funding\, understanding angel investors and venture capital\, and the role of startup accelerators and incubators in the journey. \nAs the panel exclusively comprises investors\, it provides a unique opportunity for attendees to establish connections with potential backers who may lend support to their ventures. \nAbout Startup&Angels \nStartup&Angels connects founders\, business angels\, investors\, corporates\, mentors\, and advisors through events\, workshops\, an online community (https://startupsandangels.ramenlife.co)\, podcasts (including on Spotify)\, its weekly member newsletter or social media. \nStartup&Angels partners with industry leaders in the startup ecosystem each year to give unique opportunities to the next generation of entrepreneurs to grow and expand their businesses to new heights. \nStartup&Angels runs a series of networking events (physical pitching events and online panel discussions) which over the past years\, gathered more than 10\,000 attendees including startup founders\, angel investors\, tech startup ecosystem players\, and journalists\, in more than 15 countries across the Asia Pacific.
