SUMMARY:Buying the Good Stuff: Creating a Marketplace for Social Enterprise
DESCRIPTION:Increasingly\, governments and organisations are leveraging their purchasing power for social good. This practice is known as social procurement and global spending has surged to around $14 trillion. It matters to consumers too – research shows that despite rising living costs\, 61% of consumers will pay more to an ethical business that has a social impact. \nIn WA\, some businesses are making significant strides in both economic growth and social impact\, tackling issues such as homelessness\, domestic violence\, mental health and employment for marginalised individuals. \nJoin us on Thursday\, June 20\, from 6pm-9pm for our event Buying the Good Stuff: Creating a Marketplace for Social Enterprise\, where WASEC will showcase businesses making a positive impact. We’ll explore what’s needed to make ethical purchasing mainstream to create a thriving marketplace for social entrepreneurs in Western Australia. \nThe evening will be chaired by journalist Emma Young from WAToday. Emma has covered the social impact space extensively throughout her career and donates half of the royalties from her latest book to the environmental think tank\, Beyond Zero Emissions. \nSpeakers: \n\nFranco Randazzo\, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director\, Loop Upcycling \nFrank Mitchell\, Director\, Kardan Construction\nBronwyn Bate\, CEO and Founder\, Mettle Women Inc. \nAnthony MacShane\, Founder\, Reboot Australia\nAndrew Davy\, Assistant Director\, Social Procurement & Sector Capability\, WA Government\nBen Kent\, Senior Manager of Community Impact and Engagement\, RAC\n\n\nTicket includes:  \n\nA welcome drink courtesy of Spinifex Brewing Co.\, supporting Veteran and Indigenous communities with native-infused brews\nLight snacks from Gather Foods\, an award-winning First Nations catering company offering mentorship to Aboriginal youth\nA chance to explore “Metamorphoses\,” an exhibition showcasing artists from Western Australia’s south\, emphasising connections to nature\n\nFORM Gallery and Cafe occupies one of Western Australia’s oldest surviving railway buildings\, built in 1886 as a goods shed for the railway line. It’s now a not-for-profit cultural community hub promoting WA artists and developing creativity across the state. Among others\, it is involved in the Silo Trail and brought Thomas Dambo’s Giants of Mandurah to WA. \nGetting there The event location is at Claremont train station plus\, there is plenty of free parking outside the gallery and across the road.

SUMMARY:Finding Your Why | Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Forget slogans and mission statements for a moment\, the essential first step in leading a truly change-making organisation is understanding how your innermost authentic motives create a win-win for you and the world.” \n\nWhat is the True Purpose of your enterprise?\nNot just its vision\, or values\, or 3-year horizon plan.\nWhat is the authentic motive deep down inside you that is going to bring genuine value into the world\, as opposed to merely removing value (the veiled ambition that the general public fear is the modus operandi of most modern organisations)?\nIf you can’t answer that in a short sharp sentence you may not be fully equipped to lead a purposeful enterprise in the 21st century.\n\nIn this workshop Mike Edmonds will: \n\nInstruct you on the principles of organisational purpose and show you how to surface your own.\nGuide you through the process of enunciating that purpose powerfully\, writing a short Purpose Manifesto and then seeing how that narrative might impact the behaviour of your organisation.\nShare real-world case studies from his own body of work in both commercial and social enterprises.\nFollow-up with any participant via email or Facetime as you take your newly-enunciated purpose out into the world.\n\nSuited to: \n\nBusiness owners and startup entrepreneurs who may have a general understanding of the concept of purpose but have no clear enunciation of their own\, or a full appreciation of how Purpose can help them be more competitive.\nFounders/Leaders of charities\, social enterprises and not-for-profits who feel their purpose is quite obvious but are exasperated by a lack of traction in achieving it.\nLeaders/Dept Heads of corporations or Govt departments who have a sense of purpose but are frustrated by not being able to enunciate it clearly\, or using it to unite staff around a common goal\n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop: A new Paradigm for Science Communication
DESCRIPTION:SEMINAR – UNSCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION \nHow do we get people to pay attention to science that really matters? Some research gets ignored\, some gets disputed\, and the results can be disastrous. For example\, human response to climate change has been too slow – we are decades behind an ideal response – and science communication has played a big role in that disaster. Why did it go so wrong? \nHow could we have communicated with people in a way that provoked a positive response\, instead of opposition and political polarisation? We need a new paradigm for science communication\, that really connects with people and engages them in a way that leaves them feeling good about themselves – one that will work in many different contexts for different audiences. The catch is\, it needs to be unscientific! \nWORKSHOP \nInspiring greater creativity and confidence for all researchers \n1 hour workshop 3 PM – 4 PM \nRegister for workshop here \nThis workshop is a taster for a new way to think about communication of academic results that will leverage researchers’ passion and harness their creativity in a way that brings much greater reach. \nWe’ll cover how to grab your audience with a great hook\, how to keep them with great story telling and how to conquer nerves and deliver your message in a captivating way. \nBring your own research that you’d like to communicate more clearly\, and we’ll try the techniques out!
