SUMMARY:Workshop: A new Paradigm for Science Communication
DESCRIPTION:SEMINAR – UNSCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION \nHow do we get people to pay attention to science that really matters? Some research gets ignored\, some gets disputed\, and the results can be disastrous. For example\, human response to climate change has been too slow – we are decades behind an ideal response – and science communication has played a big role in that disaster. Why did it go so wrong? \nHow could we have communicated with people in a way that provoked a positive response\, instead of opposition and political polarisation? We need a new paradigm for science communication\, that really connects with people and engages them in a way that leaves them feeling good about themselves – one that will work in many different contexts for different audiences. The catch is\, it needs to be unscientific! \nWORKSHOP \nInspiring greater creativity and confidence for all researchers \n1 hour workshop 3 PM – 4 PM \nRegister for workshop here \nThis workshop is a taster for a new way to think about communication of academic results that will leverage researchers’ passion and harness their creativity in a way that brings much greater reach. \nWe’ll cover how to grab your audience with a great hook\, how to keep them with great story telling and how to conquer nerves and deliver your message in a captivating way. \nBring your own research that you’d like to communicate more clearly\, and we’ll try the techniques out!

The AUKUS announcement and a more consequential U.S. Force Posture Initiative commitment coupled with a bigger WA shipbuilding focus\, as evidenced in the wake of Australia’s recent Combatant Surface Fleet Review\, has put HMAS Stirling and the Australian Marine Complex in Henderson in both the national and regional spotlight. \nWe are delighted to invite to Perth for this special event and program\, Dr Zack Cooper\, Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington D.C.\, Professor Alessio Patalano\, Professor of War & Strategy in East Asia\, Director\, King’s Japan Programme\, King’s College in London\, Jennifer Parker\, Expert Associate\, National Security College\, ANU\, Professor Peter Dean\, Director\, Foreign Policy and Defence at the United States Studies Centre\, The University of Sydney. Linda Dawson\, Deputy Director General\, Industry\, Science and Innovation at the Department of Jobs\, Tourism\, Science and Innovation will moderate this panel discussion and the Honourable David Johnston will be our Master of Ceremonies. \nWe hope you are available to join us as our expert speakers take a deep dive into how Western Australia fits into AUKUS and broader U.S.\, U.K. and Australian strategic thinking about the region. \nThis public event will take place in the theatre-auditorium located at The University Club of Western Australia. Please register as places are limited \nDate: Tuesday 25 June 2024 \nTime: Registration: 5:45 pm – 6:15 pm (Doors open @ 6 pm) \nEvent: 6:15 pm – 8:00 pm \nNetworking Reception: 8:00 pm – 8:45 pm \nLocation: The University Club of Western Australia – Hackett Entrance #1\, Hackett Drive\, Crawley. \nThis is a free event so registration is essential by Friday 21 June for catering purposes.
