SUMMARY:Optimising energy infrastructure development to provide reliable\, affordable clean energy for industrial hubs
DESCRIPTION:Join HILT CRC for a dynamic panel discussion on the optimisation of energy infrastructure for reliable\, affordable clean energy in the transition of heavy industry hubs. \nThe panel\, to be moderated by CSIRO’s Dr Tara Hosseini\, will feature Mitch Burt (South32 and Industry Chair of HILT’s Cross-cutting Technologies Program)\, Katie McKenzie (Australian Energy Market Operator)\, Wayne Harris (OneSteel Manufacturing)\, Kim Enkelaar (Renewables\, Climate and Future Industries Tasmania)\, Ben Saward (Grange Resources) and Professor Gus Nathan (HILT CRC and University of Adelaide). \nThe session will cover: \n\nhow heavy industry low-carbon transition pathways may change energy demands\nenergy supply options such as electricity\, natural gas and low-emissions fuels\nfollow-on implications for energy infrastructure requirements.\n\nThe panel will consider what ‘integrated energy infrastructure’ really means for industrial hubs – balancing reliability\, affordability and decarbonisation while supporting investment decisions that minimise costs and keep future options open. \nWe’ll also look at how regional plans connect with national energy planning (including AEMO) and how collaboration between industry\, governments and network planners can unlock and inform investment in energy infrastructure. \nTara will provide an update on HILT project RP3.007 Unlocking investment in energy infrastructure for net-zero industrial hubs\, which is assessing opportunities and optimal pathways for staged investments in electricity and gas infrastructure to support low-carbon energy at scale in key regional locations by 2050. \nAttendees will leave with a clearer understanding of this crucial issue and insight into some of the steps that are being – or should be – taken to advance arguably the most important requirement for heavy industry decarbonisation: affordable\, reliable low-carbon energy at scale.

SUMMARY:2025 Francis Gurry Lecture on Intellectual Property: livestream
DESCRIPTION:Unlocking Innovation: Balancing Protection and Access\nAs global competition intensifies in artificial intelligence\, quantum computing and other key emerging technologies\, balancing innovation protection with broad access becomes increasingly urgent. \nAddressing community and global challenges—including preparing for future pandemics—requires a nuanced approach that ensures innovations are both safeguarded and shared. To fully harness innovation for economic growth and societal benefit\, we must implement policies that lower barriers and empower broad participation in the innovation ecosystem. \nIn this year’s Lecture\, Kathi Vidal will explore how IP systems can evolve to foster innovation\, drive economic growth\, and maintain technological leadership\, all the while promoting collaboration and avoiding premature or excessive restrictions on ideas. Drawing from her leadership at the USPTO\, she will share insights from her work expanding the innovation economy and advancing balanced IP rights globally.

SUMMARY:MRIWA TECH TALKS: Enhanced Orebody Characterisation
DESCRIPTION:MRIWA invites you to their monthly tech talks discussing the intricate processes and findings of our recently completed projects with a chance to question the researchers face to face. \nThe Orebody Knowledge: Landscape History and Mineralisation of Martite–Goethite Ores in the Hamersley Province (MRIWA Project M0557) investigates the geological evolution and mineralisation processes of iron ore deposits in one of Western Australia’s most productive mining regions. This multidisciplinary study\, supported by industry partners and research institutions\, applied advanced analytical techniques to characterise ore deposits and trace their formation history. The project revealed how landscape evolution influences mineralisation\, offering insights to improve exploration targeting and extraction efficiency. \nBy enhancing orebody knowledge\, the research supports better decision-making in mining and processing\, helping maintain the Hamersley Province’s long-term viability. These findings contribute to Western Australia’s economic resilience and global competitiveness in iron ore production.
