SUMMARY:DEADLINE: ADSTAR 2024 Call for Submissions
DESCRIPTION:Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is calling for abstract submissions exploring disruptive technologies that would contribute to the defence of Australia by giving the country an edge over any better-resourced larger enemy. \nDSTG wants to hear from universities\, research institutions\, and research and development departments from business and industry in diverse disciplines including cyber security\, computer science\, robotics\, engineering\, communications and networking\, and the physical sciences. \nDSTG technical committees will review and select from the submissions to develop the speaker program for ADSTAR 2024. ADSTAR is the primary knowledge-sharing forum for the nation’s top minds in dual-use innovation\, disruptive technology and asymmetric defence capabilities to gather with their international counterparts and industry peers. \nDSTG is exploring the art of the possible in research and innovation: emerging technologies with the potential to deliver an asymmetric advantage – to circumvent an opponent’s strengths and deliver an element of surprise that is difficult to counter via conventional means. \nThe theme of ADSTAR 2024 is Accelerating development of asymmetric capabilities for Defence. The summit will be held against a backdrop of economic uncertainty and regional instability\, in which the nature of warfare has changed and Defence priorities are changing with it. \nThe technical review committees welcome submissions on disruptive technologies across a spectrum of capability readiness from concept development to mature demonstrations of prototypes\, particularly as they relate to six key fields: trusted autonomy\, quantum\, information warfare\, long-range fires\, hypersonics\, and directed energy.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Cultural Licence to Operate in the Blue Economy
DESCRIPTION:Flipping the script for Industry to consider the competitive advantage of working directly alongside First Nations through changing the formula of corporate responsibility in a more legitimised and objective way. \nUnlocking the Blue Economy through an inclusive and equitable approach does not happen by chance.  As governments\, investors\, rightsholders and stakeholders look to the sea as the next economic frontier\, there is a renewed focus on ensuring a balanced approach to developing and managing ocean resources through cross-disciplinary engagement. \nThe presentation and video will explore outcomes from a trans-Tasman scoping project funded to build a Cultural Licence to Operate framework that helps to create the ecosystem for an ethical\, equitable\, dynamic\, and responsive system in which negotiations are customised at place. This Indigenous-led study set out to strengthen the guiding tracks and transparency for shifting out from a transactional way to engage with First Nations through “keeping up an appearance” to building and maintaining a relational way of maximising co-benefits.

SUMMARY:Finding Your Why | Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Forget slogans and mission statements for a moment\, the essential first step in leading a truly change-making organisation is understanding how your innermost authentic motives create a win-win for you and the world.” \n\nWhat is the True Purpose of your enterprise?\nNot just its vision\, or values\, or 3-year horizon plan.\nWhat is the authentic motive deep down inside you that is going to bring genuine value into the world\, as opposed to merely removing value (the veiled ambition that the general public fear is the modus operandi of most modern organisations)?\nIf you can’t answer that in a short sharp sentence you may not be fully equipped to lead a purposeful enterprise in the 21st century.\n\nIn this workshop Mike Edmonds will: \n\nInstruct you on the principles of organisational purpose and show you how to surface your own.\nGuide you through the process of enunciating that purpose powerfully\, writing a short Purpose Manifesto and then seeing how that narrative might impact the behaviour of your organisation.\nShare real-world case studies from his own body of work in both commercial and social enterprises.\nFollow-up with any participant via email or Facetime as you take your newly-enunciated purpose out into the world.\n\nSuited to: \n\nBusiness owners and startup entrepreneurs who may have a general understanding of the concept of purpose but have no clear enunciation of their own\, or a full appreciation of how Purpose can help them be more competitive.\nFounders/Leaders of charities\, social enterprises and not-for-profits who feel their purpose is quite obvious but are exasperated by a lack of traction in achieving it.\nLeaders/Dept Heads of corporations or Govt departments who have a sense of purpose but are frustrated by not being able to enunciate it clearly\, or using it to unite staff around a common goal\n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop: A new Paradigm for Science Communication
DESCRIPTION:SEMINAR – UNSCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION \nHow do we get people to pay attention to science that really matters? Some research gets ignored\, some gets disputed\, and the results can be disastrous. For example\, human response to climate change has been too slow – we are decades behind an ideal response – and science communication has played a big role in that disaster. Why did it go so wrong? \nHow could we have communicated with people in a way that provoked a positive response\, instead of opposition and political polarisation? We need a new paradigm for science communication\, that really connects with people and engages them in a way that leaves them feeling good about themselves – one that will work in many different contexts for different audiences. The catch is\, it needs to be unscientific! \nWORKSHOP \nInspiring greater creativity and confidence for all researchers \n1 hour workshop 3 PM – 4 PM \nRegister for workshop here \nThis workshop is a taster for a new way to think about communication of academic results that will leverage researchers’ passion and harness their creativity in a way that brings much greater reach. \nWe’ll cover how to grab your audience with a great hook\, how to keep them with great story telling and how to conquer nerves and deliver your message in a captivating way. \nBring your own research that you’d like to communicate more clearly\, and we’ll try the techniques out!
