Livestream: The Engine, MIT
18 April 2023 @ 7:00 am - 8:30 am AWST
Tuesday 18th April, Breakfast Session 7 – 8.30am
The Engine, built by MIT, is a venture firm investing in the next generation of Tough Tech: a transformative and broad approach applying cutting edge technology to solve challenges in human health, climate change, and advanced systems and infrastructure. By transforming the foundations of industry, we unlock massive opportunities for a more sustainable, resilient world.
Tough Tech
What is “Tough Technology” and are we doing enough to support its development in Western Australia?
Tough Technology is based around science. Its development typically requires long time horizons, large-scale investment and access to expensive equipment. It generally involves the development of something physical which may impact the clean energy, life sciences, robotics, nanomanufacturing and infrastructure sectors.
The Engine
The Engine, built by MIT, is a Boston-based facility which fosters early-stage “tough technology” companies. It’s portfolio includes 44 startups and over US$600m under management across three VC funds. The Engine’s portfolio includes Commonwealth Fusion Systems, which is developing a fusion-powered electricity generator, and Mori, which recently raised US$50m in Series B1 financing to support its development of a natural coating to reduce food spoilage.
