The program is a collaboration across the Graduate Research Schools of The University Western Australia\, Curtin University\, Edith Cowan University\, Murdoch University and Notre Dame University. It has been developed to help bridge the ‘industry-research divide’ by linking the abilities of Australian Higher Degree by Research students to the development needs of progressive organisations. The program aims to grow Australian industries by harnessing research excellence and to provide students with paid industry placements to gain a competitive advantage across a broad range of future career paths. \nWhat will industry participants gain? \n– A multidisciplinary team of two or three PhD students\n– Cost effective\, potentially eligible for R&D tax incentive & subsidies\n– 100% ownership of intellectual property\n– Select students appropriate to your project and skill-gap\n– ‘Test-drive’ students prior to potential employment\n– A flexible participation mode (virtual\, in-person\, combination) \nProjects are defined by the organisation and can span over a 7 week or 3 month period. Projects may include new research\, proof-of-concept activities or tasks progressing commercial outputs. Students should not undertake day-to-day commercial activities but focus on a short-term research project related to their area of expertise. All Intellectual Property created during the project is retained by the organisation and creation of non-disclosure agreements is supported. \nFor queries\, contact the program manager michelle.luca@uwa.edu.au

SUMMARY:WiTWA lunchtime webinar: How to keep kickass women in tech - Take a lesson from snowboarding
DESCRIPTION:What’s the point of hiring kickass women if you don’t have an environment that supports their growth and desire to stay with your company? \nWe need to look outside the tech ‘bubble’ and adopt successful initiatives to truly and systematically increase the participation and retention of women in tech. We talk a mean talk about cultural fit\, and then fail to look at industries based on culture that are tackling the gender inequality issue and winning. \nBurton Snowboards started the Women’s Leadership Initiative which has seen the leadership team grow from 10% female to over 40% in the last 10 years. Nearly everything they do as a company is transferable to the tech industry. \nJoin Toni James\, NZ-based snowboarder turned software engineer turned security consultant\, for a lunchtime webinar as she shares the Burton story and what lessons can be learned to keep kickass women in tech.

SUMMARY:WITWA: Masterclass: Navigating the new normal of Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion 2022
DESCRIPTION:There have been a lot of important events in the world of D&I in recent years including the #MeToo movement\, increasing sexual harassment claims\, the Respect@Work report\, and Grace Tame winning Australian of the Year in 2021. One of the key barriers to progressing gender equality is that people feel uncomfortable discussing the topic and themes in the workplace. This is due to a number of reasons including the complexity of the subject\, fear of upsetting people and fear of saying the wrong thing. In this quickly changing DEI landscape it is vital that all voices are heard and we have balanced conversations. \nThis masterclass will open the door for men and women to step through together with confidence into this new world. We need to acknowledge that there is fear and address the emotions so that we can get comfortable with the new normal of DEI. It doesn’t have to be a perilous journey. This masterclass will help attendees demystify the language and gain a better understanding of the important topics. Let’s keep it simple and focus on what matters most in what it is really going to take to advance gender equality. \nBrought to you by Women in Technology WA (WiTWA)\, this masterclass will open the door for men and women to step through with confidence into this new world. We need to acknowledge that there is fear and we address the emotions so that we can get comfortable with the new normal of DEI. It doesn’t have to be a perilous journey. \nJoin us on the 4 May 2022 where WiTWA helps attendees demystify the language and gain a better understanding of the important topics. The first part of the event will be a panel discussion moderated by Vanessa Vershaw\, an elite high-performance coaching psychologist and transformation expert for Fortune 100 companies globally and Harvard Business School. She works internationally with senior leaders\, executives\, boards and teams as a catalyst for psychological transformation and sustainable high performance.

SUMMARY:Geological Knowledge Discovery using Machine Augmented Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:With the increasing use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in our daily lives such as for information search\, online shopping\, and virtual assistant AIs\, the geoscience domain has also been active in the uptake of machine learning and AI to assist in interpreting geology from data. \nThis talk presents innovative machine-assisted technologies that improve the efficiency and the robustness of geological interpretation of different types of geodata used in the resource industry. \nA number of applications of machine learning were developed in collaboration with the mining industry for the analysis and integration of multi-modal drill hole data. These applications integrate the algorithms and workflows to assist human decisions. The approach is to provide end users the control of the algorithmic process as much as possible; and to enable a seamless integration of algorithms in the interpreter’s workflow using interactive visualisation. \nThis talk also presents ongoing AI research that extracts geological insights from documents using machine reading of text. It applies advanced text mining methods and constructs a graph-based knowledge base called a knowledge graph to store and access geological information. Case studies on different mineral deposits demonstrate the effectiveness of the methods for rapidly and robustly transforming text data into structured information that faithfully represents the contents of the source reports.
