SUMMARY:Optimising energy infrastructure development to provide reliable\, affordable clean energy for industrial hubs
DESCRIPTION:Join HILT CRC for a dynamic panel discussion on the optimisation of energy infrastructure for reliable\, affordable clean energy in the transition of heavy industry hubs. \nThe panel\, to be moderated by CSIRO’s Dr Tara Hosseini\, will feature Mitch Burt (South32 and Industry Chair of HILT’s Cross-cutting Technologies Program)\, Katie McKenzie (Australian Energy Market Operator)\, Wayne Harris (OneSteel Manufacturing)\, Kim Enkelaar (Renewables\, Climate and Future Industries Tasmania)\, Ben Saward (Grange Resources) and Professor Gus Nathan (HILT CRC and University of Adelaide). \nThe session will cover: \n\nhow heavy industry low-carbon transition pathways may change energy demands\nenergy supply options such as electricity\, natural gas and low-emissions fuels\nfollow-on implications for energy infrastructure requirements.\n\nThe panel will consider what ‘integrated energy infrastructure’ really means for industrial hubs – balancing reliability\, affordability and decarbonisation while supporting investment decisions that minimise costs and keep future options open. \nWe’ll also look at how regional plans connect with national energy planning (including AEMO) and how collaboration between industry\, governments and network planners can unlock and inform investment in energy infrastructure. \nTara will provide an update on HILT project RP3.007 Unlocking investment in energy infrastructure for net-zero industrial hubs\, which is assessing opportunities and optimal pathways for staged investments in electricity and gas infrastructure to support low-carbon energy at scale in key regional locations by 2050. \nAttendees will leave with a clearer understanding of this crucial issue and insight into some of the steps that are being – or should be – taken to advance arguably the most important requirement for heavy industry decarbonisation: affordable\, reliable low-carbon energy at scale.

SUMMARY:2025 Francis Gurry Lecture on Intellectual Property: livestream
DESCRIPTION:Unlocking Innovation: Balancing Protection and Access\nAs global competition intensifies in artificial intelligence\, quantum computing and other key emerging technologies\, balancing innovation protection with broad access becomes increasingly urgent. \nAddressing community and global challenges—including preparing for future pandemics—requires a nuanced approach that ensures innovations are both safeguarded and shared. To fully harness innovation for economic growth and societal benefit\, we must implement policies that lower barriers and empower broad participation in the innovation ecosystem. \nIn this year’s Lecture\, Kathi Vidal will explore how IP systems can evolve to foster innovation\, drive economic growth\, and maintain technological leadership\, all the while promoting collaboration and avoiding premature or excessive restrictions on ideas. Drawing from her leadership at the USPTO\, she will share insights from her work expanding the innovation economy and advancing balanced IP rights globally.

SUMMARY:MRIWA TECH TALKS: Enhanced Orebody Characterisation
DESCRIPTION:MRIWA invites you to their monthly tech talks discussing the intricate processes and findings of our recently completed projects with a chance to question the researchers face to face. \nThe Orebody Knowledge: Landscape History and Mineralisation of Martite–Goethite Ores in the Hamersley Province (MRIWA Project M0557) investigates the geological evolution and mineralisation processes of iron ore deposits in one of Western Australia’s most productive mining regions. This multidisciplinary study\, supported by industry partners and research institutions\, applied advanced analytical techniques to characterise ore deposits and trace their formation history. The project revealed how landscape evolution influences mineralisation\, offering insights to improve exploration targeting and extraction efficiency. \nBy enhancing orebody knowledge\, the research supports better decision-making in mining and processing\, helping maintain the Hamersley Province’s long-term viability. These findings contribute to Western Australia’s economic resilience and global competitiveness in iron ore production.

SUMMARY:Higher Education Summit: Fit for Purpose? The Future of Governance\, Regulation and Impact of the Australian Higher Education Sector
DESCRIPTION:Australia’s higher education sector stands at a critical juncture. One shaped by enduring constitutional tensions embedded within our federated system. Historically\, universities have operated under a delicate balance between Commonwealth funding and oversight\, and state-based legislative and regulatory frameworks. Recent landmark initiative including the Australian Universities Accord\, the formation of Jobs and Skills Australia\, the establishment of the Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC)\, and changes to student migration policy have amplified these inherent complexities\, reshaping the governance and operation of universities nationwide. \nThe Universities Accord and ATEC\, driven by Commonwealth policy\, seeks to redefine the core purpose\, funding structure\, and accountability measures of universities\, challenging traditional state roles and increasing the Commonwealth’s influence. Concurrently\, tightened student migration restrictions create additional resourcing pressures\, compelling universities to reconsider their recruitment strategies\, internationalisation approaches\, and long-term sustainability. \nThese developments provoke critical policy questions: How can governance arrangements be clarified to enhance institutional autonomy while ensuring accountability to national priorities? To what extent does constitutional considerations limit or enable sector-wide innovation and reform? And importantly\, how can policy coordination between Commonwealth and state governments be strengthened to better support universities? \nJoin senior education executives\, policy leaders\, constitutional experts\, and leading academics to navigate these questions\, and explore practical policy pathways for a resilient\, effective\, and purpose-driven Australian higher education system. \nRegister here: Higher Education Summit: Fit for Purpose? For the fifth consecutive year\, they invite you to celebrate the remarkable advancements in technology and innovation within the global nuclear energy sector. \nThis year’s theme\, “We are critical mass!” highlights the collective impact and support needed to drive nuclear energy forward as a crucial part of our clean energy future. December 2nd holds profound significance\, honouring the groundbreaking achievement of the first self-sustaining chain reaction and the launch of the world’s first commercial-scale electric power reactor. On this day in 1942\, Enrico Fermi’s Chicago Pile-1 reactor made history with a self-sustaining chain reaction. Exactly 15 years later\, on December 2\, 1957\, the first commercial reactor in Shippingport\, Pennsylvania\, reached criticality. \nAs Australia intensifies its pursuit of zero emissions\, nuclear energy continues to gather support and recognition as a vital\, clean\, and reliable power source. Join in acknowledging this incredible legacy and exploring nuclear energy’s promise as we look to the future.

SUMMARY:SHIELD CRC Industry Workshop - Online
DESCRIPTION:Australia is increasingly reliant on precise and secure Positioning\, Navigation and Timing (PNT)\, and that dependency is becoming a vulnerability. \nFrom banking and energy to transport and emergency services\, our critical systems depend on satellite- based positioning and timing\, mostly from foreign-operated Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like GPS. These signals are unprotected\, unverified\, and easily disrupted by interference\, cyberattack\, or space weather. As digital transformation accelerates and systems become more autonomous and interconnected\, the consequences of a PNT failure multiply risking blackouts\, communication loss\, navigation failures\, and financial disruption. \nThe SHIELD CRC can change this: Together we can build a sovereign\, resilient\, and secure PNT ecosystem for Australia – one that detects threats\, withstands interference\, and recovers quickly so that business continuity\, public safety and economic stability are not left vulnerable to forces beyond our control. \nThe outputs of the CRC will improve productivity and business continuity\, simulate new industry growth and strengthen sovereignty national security. \n
