SUMMARY:Morning Startup Presentation: What it really takes to keep a small tech company alive
DESCRIPTION:Morning Startup Presentation: \nBrendan and Liz Wright\, the husband-and-wife team behind Joondalup-based CommunityToGo\, have pivoted again and again. In the early 2010s\, when apps were still a novelty\, they delivered over 150 of them to schools\, clubs\, churches and community groups\, before realising their customers weren’t really buying an app at all; they were trying to drive change. That insight sparked the first of many reinventions\, leading to their current focus on AI. \nExpect candid lessons on finding the real problem behind your product\, knowing when to pivot\, running a business as a couple\, and staying relevant as the technology shifts underneath you. \nAbout our speakers: \nBrendan Wright is the newly appointed General Manager of ALT USA\, the United States business unit of Aquatic Leisure Technologies (ALT)\, and previously its Digital Transformation Lead. With more than 30 years in ICT\, including over 15 years with global vendors such as Oracle and SAP\, he has been involved in startups since 2013\, including four years as Co-Founder and Managing Director of CommunityToGo. \nLiz Wright is the Lead Developer at CommunityToGo and the builder behind the business\, turning ideas into working products. Most recently she designed and built Coaches-Coach Sports\, a multi-sport AI coaching platform delivered in partnership with Bevo Sports\, using AI-assisted development to deliver in months what once took a full team. She’s also an accomplished watercolour painter who brings an artist’s eye for clean\, simple design to her tech work.

SUMMARY:Activating Innovation Precincts: Lessons from the University of Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:Innovation precincts are often presented as places where universities\, industry\, government\, start-ups and communities come together — but proximity alone does not create collaboration. In this fireside chat\, Vanessa Campbell\, Director of Innovation Precincts at the University of Melbourne\, will explore what it takes to turn a physical precinct into an active innovation ecosystem. Drawing on experience across Melbourne Connect and the wider Parkville and Arden context\, the conversation will examine the operating models\, partnerships\, programming and trust-building needed to move from a property-led vision to sustained collaboration. \nAbout the speaker: Vanessa Campbell leads the University of Melbourne’s work on innovation precincts\, focusing on how universities can move beyond physical development to create genuinely active ecosystems of collaboration. In this practical conversation\, she will share lessons on how innovation precincts can become more than buildings\, labs or co-location spaces — and instead create the conditions for meaningful collaboration across universities\, companies\, government\, start-ups and communities. The session will be valuable for anyone involved in developing\, operating or partnering within innovation precincts\, including leaders and professionals working in external engagement\, innovation\, partnerships\, entrepreneurship\, research translation\, economic development and ecosystem building. \nLearn more and register here

SUMMARY:AUSTMINE Philippines Market Entry Readiness: From Market Insight to Action
DESCRIPTION:Philippines Market Entry Readiness: From Market Insight to Action \nAustmine and the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) invite Australian Mining Equipment\, Technology and Services (METS) companies to join a practical webinar focused on taking the next step in the Philippines mining market.\nThe Philippines presents opportunities for Australian METS across mining equipment\, technology\, engineering\, processing\, environmental management\, safety\, training and operational improvement. Turning those opportunities into meaningful engagement requires companies to consider where their capabilities fit\, what information they still need and how prepared they are to pursue the market. \nBuilding on the Philippines Mining Market introduction held on 13 August 2026\, this 90-minute webinar will move from market understanding to practical preparation. It will help companies consider what the market information means for their business\, identify areas requiring further validation and decide where to focus their next effort. \nThrough in-market and industry perspectives\, the session will explore practical considerations for engaging in the Philippines and lessons companies can apply to their own market approach. Speakers will be announced once confirmed.

SUMMARY:Physical AI Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Hear 3 expert talks\, take the mic for a demo or announcement. Connect with ANZ’s largest AI/hardware community over pizza & drinks. \nListen and learn\, share a quick demo\, prototype\, or announcement – whether it’s AI\, hardware\, or something you’re building. All welcome. \nPresentations:\n\nTalk 1 by Massimo Sacchi: Democratisation of Edge AI This talk brings Physical AI down from theory to the factory floor. It opens by framing Edge AI along two axes—edge versus cloud\, and learned models versus traditional analytical rules—then walks through why industrial environments increasingly demand on-device intelligence. \n\n\nTalk 2 by Stanley Chong: 20ms vs 2 Seconds: What a Safety Vest Taught Us About Choosing the Right Visual AI Not every vision problem needs a giant model — and not every giant model needs to see pixels the way you’d think. In this talk we’ll unpack the real differences between CNNs\, Vision-Language Models (VLMs)\, and multimodal LLMs: what they’re each actually built to do\, where their reasoning comes from\, and why picking the wrong one costs you either accuracy or your latency budget. \n\n\nTalk 3 by Dr Fangyi Zhang: Gentle Embodied AI: Vision- and Tactile-Based Robotic Manipulation for a Delicate World Modern robots excel at tasks demanding force\, speed\, and repeatability\, yet they remain remarkably poor at gentleness – the careful\, adaptive\, contact-rich interaction required to handle fragile objects\, manipulate deformable materials\, or physically collaborate with people safely. This talk begins with vision-based manipulation and learning-based control – how robots can acquire visuo-motor skills\, transfer them from simulation to the real world\, and learn manipulation behaviours by watching human demonstrations. \n\nPizza and drinks for this meetup are made possible by our sponsor\, the Innovation Central Perth – an industry and science collaboration centre located at Curtin University\, with the vision of advancing digital transformation through an open innovation ecosystem. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:State of Startup Funding Roundtable (invite only)
DESCRIPTION:The State of Startup Capital in WA: in a state awash with money\, why is “access to capital” still not solved? \nWestern Australia has no shortage of wealth\, yet startups make up a tiny proportion of their investment portfolios (about 0.4%). Do they need educating on ESIC? Furthermore\, WA startups attract very little Australian venture capital. Around 2%. \n\nOur next StartupWA Roundtable brings founders\, investors and ecosystem builders together to work out why\, and what we can actually change. SUMMARY:IN:WA Panel - Working Harder\, Not Smarter. Are We Burning Out the Industry?
DESCRIPTION:The next 2026 IN:WA Panelist event lands on Thursday 15th October at Lawson Flats. \n\n\n\n\nA space for independent agency leaders and industry voices to have honest conversations about what’s shaping our sector. Each IN:WA Panel session brings together experienced operators and external perspectives to challenge thinking and spark real discussion. \nOpen to both IN:WA Members and Non-Members alike! Come to connect\, contribute\, and experience the IN:WA community firsthand. \nIN:WA is bringing together industry experts to discuss the topic: Working Harder\, Not Smarter. Are We Burning Out the Industry? \nAsk anyone in agency life how they’re going and you’ll hear some version of “busy.” More channels\, faster turnarounds\, thinner margins\, always-on communication. But is the industry genuinely harder than it used to be\, or are we just running it the same way we always have while the world around it has changed? \nThis panel brings together three perspectives you don’t usually get in the same room: someone who’s lived through decades of industry culture\, someone who’s just entered it\, and someone who sees the clinical patterns across workplaces like these. \nIN:WA provides a united voice for Western-Australian-owned businesses across the breadth of the creative communications industry\, including Advertising\, Branding\, Digital\, Media\, PR and Production.
