SUMMARY:Mapping the Circular Economy of WA – Tour | Talk | Sundowner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our last event of 2023! \nWe’re excited to host our last event of the year at the Legacy Living Lab (L3) where we will be joined by Roberto Minunno and Josh Hopkins who will be giving us a tour of L3\, its purpose and an insight into the WATCH project – Mapping the circular economy of WA – monitoring the contributions of circularity towards achieving Net Zero: Stage 1. \nWe will finish the event with a sundowner with drinks and nibbles provided. \nThe Legacy Living Lab (L3) is the first building in Western Australia that is both modular and designed for disassembly and reuse. L3 is constructed on recyclable steel footings\, saving 20 tons of concrete. The building is not welded\, glued or fixed\, instead it harnesses nuts and bolts\, spacers and magnets.\nIn three years\, it will be disassembled in a day or two and moved elsewhere. If L3 had been built in a regular fashion\, with end of life going to landfill\, then the greenhouse gas equivalent impact would have been 50 tons. Life cycle assessment for L3 demonstrates only 5 tons of greenhouse gas equivalent impact. Designing for reuse provides a factor 10 environmental improvement. \nRoberto Minunno \nRoberto is a subject matter expert in circular economy and sustainable\, modular building design\, and life cycle assessment. With a background in civil engineering\, Roberto is driven to create solutions to sustainability and circular economy challenges. He completed his PhD on the circular economy of buildings at Curtin University\, where\, among other methods\, he developed expertise in applying Life Cycle Assessments and circular economy indicators to products and processes. As part of his PhD\, Roberto and the team at Curtin University Sustainable Policy (CUSP) Institute ideated the Legacy Living Lab: a moveable\, disassemble\, modular building\, enabling a deeper understanding and application of the circular economy concerning building materials\, components and operations. The Living Lab is currently in Fremantle where it hosts a hub of research activity and industry collaborations. \nJosh Hopkins \nA product and data specialist. His focus is on human-centred digital transformation\, for the betterment of people and the planet. He is also a research associate at Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute (CUSP)\, European institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) alumni\, TEDx speaker\, and award-winning entrepreneur. He is the Founding Director of Open Corridor\, a data-driven nonprofit focused on democratising sustainability intelligence.\n\nRun Sheet \n4.00pm – Registrations and Networking \n4.30pm – Tour of L3 and insight into WATCH project \n5.00pm – Sundowner\, networking and nibbles \n6.00pm – Event finish

SUMMARY:The 7 Hardest Lessons I Learned Starting a Non-Profit
DESCRIPTION:Details\n\n\nJoin us for an insightful journey with Rahul Seth\, about his journey up to being named 2023 WA Volunteer of the Year\, and the creation of his meetup Activate Mental Health. \nDate and time: November 8th\, 2023\, 5pm-6:30pm \nPlace: Riff (The Vault) @ Spacecubed – 45 St George’s Terrace\, Perth. \nWho should attend? \n\nPeople aiming to start up an organisation\, whether that would be a for profit or not-for-profit entity.\nThose passionate about mental health and well-being.\nPeople who are open to networking and meeting like-minded people.\nPeople who like to hear a feel-good story.\n\nWhat you will gain: \n\nAn insight into the challenge of building an organisation from scratch.\nUnderstand the need to put your health and well-being first before your entity.\nLearn why word of mouth is the strongest form of marketing you have available.\nFind out the importance of networking and mentorship.\nGet practical tips about obtaining feedback and insights into the work you produce.\n\nWhy attend \nAre there similarities in starting up a for profit business or a not-for-profit organisation? Although they are both different forms of legal entities\, they still face exactly the same challenges to become groups that are both self-sustaining and that can effectively serve the communities that they aim to engage with. \nActivate Mental Health is a 7-year-old entity that has been built from the ground up that is changing the landscape of Perth’s mental health sector. Through the provision of fun\, volunteer-led peer support social activities\, the group has helped a large number of people to reduce their social isolation\, make friendships and engage in activities they enjoy\, leading to improvements in their mental well-being. \nActivate Mental Health currently has over 20 engaged volunteers who run over 300 events annually across Perth for its 5\,500+ members. This\, remarkably\, is all done on a budget of $4\,000 per annum\, which is completely financed by three loyal small businesses. The group is progressing to become a registered charity in this current financial year. \nHear from group founder Rahul Seth about the 7 lessons he wishes he had known before commencing on the journey to building a game-changing organisation that is making a true impact in the community. \nBiography \nRahul Seth is a Chartered Accountant and founder of Perth’s biggest mental well-being support group\, Activate Mental Health. The organisation was formed in 2016. initially as a way to have some fun and make new friends but has now expanded into an entity that is on the verge of becoming a registered charity. Rahul professionally works as a NDIS mental health support worker. In May 2023\, Rahul was named as the 2023 WA Volunteer of the Year for his contributions to the not-for-profit and mental health sectors.
