ICIP and IP for Indigenous Businesses

The workshop is for Indigenous business owners, artists, entrepreneurs and start-ups wanting practical tools to protect their cultural knowledge, business assets and intellectual property.
By the end of the Workshop, participants should be able to:
- understand what ICIP is, the difference between ICIP and Western IP law (copyright and trade marks), where the two intersect and conflict, and how collective/communal rights interact with individual and business ownership;
- recognise the ICIP issues that arise when setting up a business that draws on Indigenous knowledge, stories, designs or culture, and apply the ICIP Protocols and the 10 True Tracks® Principles as a practical framework;
- understand copyright basics, including what copyright protects, ownership, authorship and moral rights;
- understand essential terms for licensing and other agreements;
- protect confidential information and trade secrets in their business;
- understand how patents work and their limits for traditional knowledge of native plants and bush products;
- understand trade mark and branding basics, including issues in using Indigenous language or knowledge in a business name or brand;
- recognise the risks and opportunities of AI for Indigenous businesses, including AI use of ICIP without consent; and
- know practical strategies for protecting IP and ICIP.
This workshop is free to attend for First Nations Peoples.
